West Point matte painting
A matte painting and comp of West Point I did recently for the Amazon Civil War drama Point of Honor at Fuse FX. What makes this shot unique is that we integrated parts of antique photos by Matthew Brady with modern photos of the West Point location. The building was rebuilt years ago and looks completely different today, although the landscape looks the same.
Using very high resolution scans of his photographs, I first retouched the scratches and dust, removed unwanted details, and then colorized them. I then blended them with photos of modern stone buildings. The final comp was projected in Nuke to add some slight 3-D parallax.

Gnomon paint demo- master copy
This was an in-class demo for my digital painting class at Gnomon School. The exercise is to copy a classic master work, and this is based on The Sulphur Match, by Sargent.
..and this shows the process in time-lapse.
